The good news for those who want to try it is there are more than a thousand dating sites for every possible interest, including such places as vampirerave.com, for the vampire community.
According to the site, "where other sites match on a picture and a paragraph, eHarmony matches you based on compatibility in the most important areas of life - like values, character, intellect, sense of humor, spiritual beliefs, passion, and up to 24 other dimensions."
The first 10 rounds of questions, titled "self-description" and "personal characteristics," included rating how well each of the words they listed describe me.
When I had answered all of the questions - an hour later - a message came on the screen stating: "We are searching millions of profiles to find your match."
"Unfortunately, we are not able to make our profiles work for you. Our matching model could not accurately predict with whom you would be best matched. This occurs for about 20 percent of potential users, so one in five people simply will not benefit from our service. We hope that you understand and we regret out inability to provide service to you at this time."
Site founder Dr. Warren was quoted as saying in a USA Today piece that the service tries to "weed" out people the site decides are lying and those believed to have certain types of emotional instability.
"You'd like to have as healthy people as you can," Warren said in the story. "We get some people who are pretty unhealthy. And if you could filter them out, it would be great."
I had better luck on Match.com and the Yahoo personals, which allow you to fill out a profile and look at other profiles without paying anything. The only catch is if you want to contact someone, you have to pay the fee.
Match.com recently teamed up with Dr. Phil, and if he can help a man who weighs more than a 1,000 pounds and an anorexic bride, certainly he can help me get a date.
And for the record, eHarmony.com, I received four "icebreakers" and a date from the Yahoo personals, including one from an "adorable blonde who seeks love of a lifetime."
